Trump Team Testing ‘Off-the-Shelf’ Drugs to Cure Coronavirus

(Bloomberg) -- The Trump administration is testing existing “off-the-shelf” drugs to combat the coronavirus, a cabinet official said Saturday.A national lab in Tennessee recently made “an important discovery” involving existing drugs, Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette said at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland.“The scientists at our Oak Ridge National Laboratory were able to look at the protein strains and determine -- perhaps, it’s still early -- that we can find some off-the-shelf drugs that can help us not only cure the disease but stop the spread of the infection,” Brouillette said.Brouillette was responding to a question about what his agency is doing to help combat the virus, which has caused markets to plunge and killed nearly 3,000 people across the globe. Turkey raises migrant pressure on Europe over Syria conflict

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday threatened to let thousands of refugees cross into Europe and warned Damascus would "pay a price" after dozens of Turkish troops were killed inside Syria. Around 13,000 migrants have gathered along the Turkish-Greek border, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said as several thousand migrants were in skirmishes with Greek police firing tear gas across the frontier. The escalating tensions between Turkey and Russia, who back opposing forces in the Syria conflict, after an air strike killed the Turkish troops sparked fears of a broader war and a new migration crisis for Europe.

South Koreans told to stay home as coronavirus infections surpass 3,100

South Korea urged citizens on Saturday to stay indoors as it warned of a "critical moment" in its battle on the coronavirus after recording the biggest daily jump in infections, as 813 new cases took the tally to 3,150. South Korea is grappling with the largest outbreak of the virus outside China, as a new death took the toll to 17, amid a record daily increase in infections since the country confirmed its first patient on Jan. 20. It was a "critical moment" in reining in the spread of the virus, he said, adding, "Please stay at home and refrain from going outside and minimize contact with other people."

Stock markets are headed for a 40 percent plunge, says economist who predicted financial crisis

The end of a very rough week for U.S. markets brought a worrying prediction.While one expert warned fallout from the global coronavirus outbreak could be "worse than the financial crisis" of 2008, the economist who correctly predicted that very crisis is now saying the idea of a major global recession "doesn't sound too farfetched."Nouriel Roubini, a New York University business professor and market prognosticator who foretold the housing bubble burst, told Yahoo Finance on Friday to expect "severe" consequences as the coronavirus continues to rattle markets. How severe? He told Der Spiegel it could be worse than investors even believe at this point, predicting "global equities to tank by 30 to 40 percent this year."He said people "prefer to believe in miracles," (not necessarily referencing President Trump's prediction the coronavirus will "disappear ... like a miracle,") and don't realize the "simple math" tells us that realistically, a squeezed Chinese economy will mean downturns around the globe. "This crisis will spill over and result in a disaster," said Roubini.Roubini, who is often nicknamed Dr. Doom for his frequent pessimistic predictions, also saw doom and gloom for Trump's future as president as a result of any economic strife. Asked by Der Spiegel, Roubini said Trump would likely try to benefit politically from the outbreak, but "will lose the election, that's for sure." Pointing to past incumbent presidents getting ousted amid geopolitical tensions that damaged the economy, he said "The Democratic field is poor, but Trump is dead. Quote me on that!"Though the week just saw a 3,500-point drop for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Roubini warned: "It is far from being over." Barclays bankers acquitted over fraud charges in Qatar deal

Three former Barclays bankers were cleared Friday of fraud over a 4 billion-pound ($5.2 billion) investment deal with Qatar at the height of the global financial crisis in 2008. The three men — Roger Jenkins, Thomas Kalaris and Richard Boath — were acquitted after a five-month trial at London's Old Bailey. The case was brought by Britain's Serious Fraud Office, which had accused the three men of hiding the true nature of the fundraising plan with Qatar from authorities and other shareholders.

Syria killed 33 Turkish soldiers on Thursday in a series of air strikes.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a phone conversation Friday told Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who backs Syrian government forces, that any Syrian military position was a legitimate target for Turkish forces. Erdogan is scheduled to speak with President Trump on Friday regarding the attacks on the Turkish military and the refugee issue.The nine-year Syrian civil war has produced one of the world's largest refugee crises, with millions of migrants fleeing to Europe throughout the conflict.

‘Mulan’ Remake Features a New Recording of “Reflection” by Christina Aguilera

Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Mulan may not share a lot in common with its animated counterpart, but one thing it will share is the best Disney song: Christina Aguilera‘s “Reflection.” The ballad that the pop singer recorded for the 1998 Disney movie (and which subsequently helped launch her career) was the sweeping centerpiece for the film and remains one of its most iconic songs. But while fans may gripe over Mulan not being a musical, they will at least get the chance to hear a new version of “Reflection” recorded by Aguilera herself.

During a performance at her Las Vegas residency Xperience (via CBR), Aguilera announced that she recorded a new version of “Reflection” along with some “new material” for the live-action remake of Mulan.

“The live-action Mulan is coming out by the way,” she told the crowd. “You have to go see it. I recorded a new ‘Reflection’ and new material for the movie. I’ve been working on that, but this is the original.”

The beloved song and staple of many a karaoke session was sung in the 1998 animated film by Lea Salonga, and became the film’s pivotal “I want” song, in which Mulan grappled with her identity. As the Niki Caro-directed live-action remake isn’t a musical, I expected maybe an instrumental version of “Reflection” to pensively play at some point during the film, but perhaps we’ll get a full-fledged needle drop, based on Aguilera’s announcement. If not that, at least Aguilera’s version could play over the credits.

This marks the first time Aguilera has spoken about her involvement with the Mulan remake, though the singer made a surprise appearance at last year’s D23 Expo to sing “Reflection” at the beginning of the Mulan panel. Perhaps that should’ve been a hint.

Mulan, which is directed by Niki Caro and stars Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li, hits theaters on March 27, 2020.

‘The Raid’ Remake Writer Once Pitched an R-Rated ‘The Punisher’ Movie to Marvel

Ever since Jon Bernthal perfectly inhabited the vengeful antihero in Netflix’s The Punisher, fans have been clamoring for the actor to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. It’s unlikely to ever happen, considering Disney’s family-friendly focus and the cancellation of Marvel and Netflix’s more mature superhero series. But that didn’t stop one pitch from trying to make it so.

Writer Adam G. Simon, who pens the upcoming remake of Gareth Evans’ 2011 brutal martial arts action phenomenon The Raid isn’t a remake anymore(which apparently ), is adding his voice to the crowd of those wishing for a Jon Bernthal The Punisher outing with the revelation that he once pitched an R-rated The Punisher movie to Marvel. Simon even had a full fledged idea of how to make it happen.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Simon revealed that he pitched an R-rated The Punisher movie “years before the [Netflix] series dropped.” The film was “like Falling Down by way of Full Metal Jacket,” the writer described before revealing that his film followed the previous two movies the violent vigilante Frank Castle on a mission that would bring him face-to-face with Nick Fury. But he adjusted his pitch in this conversation to take place after the series. Simon explained:

“In my take, we find Frank Castle as we left him at the end of the series, only now completely aware of the threat that superheroes and villains pose to mankind. So, Frank Castle has to go gunning for the person who he feels is responsible for the innumerable civilian casualties. The one who started it all by organizing these weapons of mass destruction to come together. Nick Fury. The twist is that Frank is being used, he spots the double-cross early at the end of act one. From that point on, we have a 3:10 to Yuma situation. Frank and Fury on the run from everyone, heroes and villains. It’s 3:10 to Yuma meets Leon: The Professional by way of Winter Soldier.”

“I put together the opening fifteen pages, the pitch deck, everything,” Simon said, revealing that he came to Marvel with his pitch around the time that Thomas Jane was playing the character in the 2004 Jonathan Hensleigh film and the accompanying 2012 short “Dirty Laundry.”

But Simon didn’t anticipate Bernthal’s take, which he gushed “really nailed it.” The writer went on to imagine his original pitch with Bernthal in the role. “I want Bernthal to continue to explore the character and be completely unfettered and out of control. I think he does too,” Simon said. Simon made a casting wish list for this new version of his Punisher pitch, and threw in Eminem on the soundtrack for good measure. He told ComicBook:

“First, since he was so pissed about it getting canceled, you get Eminem on board for the music and the soundtrack. Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, Joel Edgerton as Bullseye, Kristin Scott Thomas or Edie Falco as Ma Gnucci, Jeffrey Wright or Russell Crowe as Micro, Sam Jackson as Nick Fury and a few of The Avengers, namely, Falcon, Black Widow, and Winter Soldier. Oh, and since we are talking obscene amounts of violence and mayhem, you get Joe Lynch directing. If fans got a problem with that hot take, I got seven others. Let’s go.”

Well, there you go. Simon’s already got the idea and the cast, as well as a star who is probably willing to return to the role. Your move, Marvle.
