‘Beast’: Idris Elba Will Face Off Against a Lion in New Thriller From ‘Contraband’ Director

Idris Elba once played the villainous Shere Khan in Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, but now the actor will go toe to toe with the king of the forest in a new thriller called Beast.

Baltasar Kormakur, the Iceland-born director whose previous credits include Contraband, The Deep, 2 Guns, Everest, The Oath, and Adrift, is set to make this new Beast movie for Universal Pictures, according to Deadline. Plot details are still slim, but the film is reportedly in the vein of Jaume Collet-Serra’s hyper-focused Blake Lively survival thriller The Shallows, “but instead of sharks, a lion [will] be involved as a the central antagonist.”

Idris Elba vs. a lion? Sign me the hell up. Elba is a terrific actor with an impressive range, and while I appreciate his dramas as much as the next cinephile, I’ve always kind of hoped that he’d lean into action hero mode a little bit more since he’s evidently not going to be the next James Bond. Maybe starring in a fun B-movie where he faces off against a lion will spark a new era of his career where he can pull a Liam Neeson and release one of these types of movies every few years. There must be something in the water right now with lions, because Megan Fox just starred in a movie called Rogue where she faced off against killer lions, and Barry Jenkins was just announced as the director of Disney’s new follow-up to The Lion King. Looks like all those years of lion lobbying in Hollywood are finally paying off.

This film is based on an original idea by writer Jaime Primak-Sullivan, who previously cooked up the story for the Gabrielle Union-led home invasion movie Breaking In. Ryan Engle (Rampage) was credited with writing the screenplay for Breaking In, and Engle is writing the screenplay for Beast, once again tackling a script based on a Primak-Sullivan idea.

Will Packer, who has been one of the most successful producers in Hollywood over the past several years thanks to films like Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along, Think Like a Man, and Girls Trip, is producing this movie along with his production partner James Lopez. They previously worked with Primak-Sullivan and Engle on Breaking In. Kormakur is producing as well.

Idris Elba has faced off against powerhouses like Hela, Hobbs, and Shaw, but can he survive an encounter with a lion? Elba's is in for a rough day in survival thriller Beast, according to a report from THR.

Initial reports offer very little on the film's plot, other than that Elba will be fighting for his life as a lion hunts him; reports compare the film to Blake Lively's The Shallows, which has her surviving a shark attack.

The thriller is an original idea from producer Jamie Primak-Sullivan, with writer Ryan Engle working on the script. Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur is set to direct, and will produce alongside Primak-Sullivan, Will Packer, and James Lopez. Kormakur is best known films made in his native Iceland, but has directed movies like Adrift and Two Guns. Ryan Engle, meanwhile, penned screenplays for Dwayne Johnson's Rampage and Liam Neeson's The Commuter and Non-Stop.

‘Bill and Ted Face the Music’ Has Made 10 Times More on PVOD Than in Theaters

It’s been something of a rarity to get a clear look at how certain movies have performed financially during the COVID era than it was in the Before Times. However, a picture is beginning to emerge around MGM and Orion’s Bill and Ted Face the Music which indicates that dropping the film on PVOD was a smart play by the studio. A new report says that Dean Parisot‘s comedy sequel has made just about ten times more on PVOD than it has in theaters so far.

Deadline reports that the movie, which was distributed by United Artists Releasing, has grossed $3.3 million in theaters since its opening on August 28, 2020, but the Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter vehicle has made around $32 million through paid video on demand services. That disparity is obviously due to the lasting and still-ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and in the wake of Tenet‘s somewhat muted box office performance recently, it contributes to the idea that most people still are not willing to go out in droves to visit their local movie theaters.

You can head over to Deadline for some speculation about how this might affect MGM in the long term, but one thing is for sure: all eyes are going to be on them as they decide whether to keep No Time to Die in its current slot or kick it into 2021. It certainly seems like they’re digging their heels in: the official James Bond podcast just launched, and the studio likely wouldn’t have reignited its marketing push if it planned to punt the movie into next year. We’ll keep you in the loop with any updates on that front.

In the meantime, Bill & Ted Face the Music will be available on digital on October 20, 2020 and on Blu-ray/DVD on November 10, 2020. Get the details below:

Why Trump voters just don't care about his taxes

The revelation, per Sunday's New York Times report, that President Trump paid little to no federal income tax in recent years will redirect the conversation at Tuesday night's general election debate. But will it redirect any meaningful number of votes?I suspect not, not even among the president's most reluctant supporters.In broad strokes, there are two reasons to vote for Trump in 2020: liking who he is or liking what (you think) he'll do. This is an artificial separation of two rationales that often overlap, but let's call them the personality voter and the transactional voter.The personality voter likes how crude and cunning Trump is. She proudly brands herself "a deplorable" in reference to Hillary Clinton's infamous 2016 remark. She thinks it's funny when Trump riles his enemies, who, not coincidentally, are her enemies, too. This strain of Trump support tends to have a strong populist flavor, where supporting Trump gives "a collective middle finger" to political and cultural elites this voter despises and whom she believes despise her in turn.For the personality voter, Trump's ability to avoid paying income taxes is untroubling. It's far from the first violation of establishment norms she has vicariously enjoyed through her candidate. If anything, she agrees, as he said at a 2016 debate with Clinton, that successful tax avoidance "makes [him] smart." The populist hypocrisy Trump's critics see here won't register.Personality isn't necessarily relevant for the transactional voter, our second type. In some cases, Trump's personality helps him deliver on his side of the transaction. If the thing a voter wants from Trump is to own the libs, for example, his personality is an asset. But if the thing desired involves a policy or program, Trump's personality might be immaterial or actually detrimental. Many purely transactional voters would willingly — maybe far more willingly — vote for any candidate who would do what they want Trump to do. Their vote isn't for Trump qua Trump but for Trump qua the candidate they think is most likely to provide what they want."I voted for the Supreme Court. I didn't want to vote for Trump," an archetypal transactional Trump voter named Jim George told The Washington Post in 2017. "With Trump, you just hold your nose."A transactional Trump voter in 2020 is already holding his nose too firmly to catch a whiff of these tax returns. If he's decided everything Trump has said and done over the past four years does not tip the scales against whatever good he believes will come from re-electing the president, the tax story won't do it, either. It definitely won't turn him into a Joe Biden voter, and I'm skeptical that it could even keep him home, because Trump's personal life is irrelevant to his provision of whatever benefit(s) is anticipated.The transactional voter is already under contract. He's had ample time to inspect Trump, and he didn't find anything that made him want to back out of the deal.There is one scenario in which that arrangement might fall through, and that's if Trump's personal financial circumstances rendered him unable to hold up his end of the imagined bargain. But how would that happen? Or rather, how would the transactional voter become convinced it had happened were he satisfied with Trump's performance to date?The Times reported Trump has hundreds of millions of dollars in debt for which he is personally liable coming due over the next four years, possibly including around $100 million owed to the IRS should the agency decide a large tax rebate was improperly obtained. These are staggering numbers for us little people to contemplate, but if he holds onto the presidency, Trump is expected simply to obtain extensions on his loans and use his office however he can to mitigate his personal financial catastrophe. It would be an enormous debacle, very possibly leading to another impeachment or special counsel investigation and distracting the president from whatever his part of the transaction is supposed to be.Well, so what? Trump's first four years have had an enormous debacle every week, and an impeachment and special counsel investigation, too. Trump accomplished relatively little of his policy promises, certainly none of the headlines. The wall is not built; the swamp is not drained; not a single one of the "endless wars" is ended; the American steel industry did not come roaring back to life. ‘A Fistful Of Dollars’ TV Series in Development

The other day word broke regarding a Rashomon TV series based on the Akira Kurosawa movie of the same name. Now…here comes news of A Fistful of Dollars TV series, which is, of course, also based on a Kurosawa movie – Yojimbo. Directed by Sergio Leone and released in 1964, A Fistful of Dollars was Clint Eastwood‘s first starring role and turned him into a leading man. He played the Man with No Name, a part he’d play again in For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).

A Fistful of Dollars was what you’d call an “unofficial” remake of Yojimbo. So unofficial, in fact, that Yojimbo studio Toho filed a lawsuit – one that was settled out of court. And now it’s going to become a TV show, according to Deadline. Mark Gordon Pictures is developing the project, and Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman is rumored to be handling the adaptation.

In A Fistful of Dollars, “The Man With No Name (Clint Eastwood) enters the Mexican village of San Miguel in the midst of a power struggle among the three Rojo brothers (Antonio Prieto, Benny Reeves, Sieghardt Rupp) and sheriff John Baxter (Wolfgang Lukschy). When a regiment of Mexican soldiers bearing gold intended to pay for new weapons is waylaid by the Rojo brothers, the stranger inserts himself into the middle of the long-simmering battle, selling false information to both sides for his own benefit.” This same story – again, pulled from Yojimbo – also inspired the Bruce Willis/Walter Hill movie Last Man Standing (1996). The Fistful of Dollars TV show will reportedly “pull from this source material for an original, contemporary retelling of the story.”

A Fistful of Dollars is notable for launching Clint Eastwood’s movie star career. Eastwood had acted before the film, but it was his decision to head over to Italy and make this Spaghetti Western that finally turned him into a leading man (if that scenario sounds familiar to you it’s because Quentin Tarantino borrowed it for Leonardo DiCaprio’s Cliff Boothe in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

I’m sure this premise – a mysterious outsider playing two feuding sides against each other – can work just fine in a TV setting. Still, there’s a part of me that always cringes when someone decides to turn a classic movie into a TV show. I try very hard not to pre-judge this sort of stuff, but it always just strikes me as a little lazy. There’s no network set for the show yet, but per Deadline’s story, “Mark Gordon Pictures has an existing deal with eOne, under which they continue to acquire, develop, and produce an expansive slate of projects spanning multiple genres and mediums.”

‘Vampires vs. The Bronx’ Trailer: Teens Go to War With the Undead

In 1995, Eddie Murphy played a vampire in Brooklyn in the not-so-classic film Vampire in Brooklyn. But twenty-five years later, the undead are moving into a different New York City borough in a new Netflix horror-comedy.

Check out the Vampires vs. The Bronx trailer below, which seems closer to something like Attack the Block than Eddie Murphy’s ill-fated box office dud.

Oz Rodriguez (The Wire: The Musical) and Blaise Hemingway (Playmobil: The Movie) co-wrote the script for Vampires vs. The Bronx, and Rodriguez also served as the director. His previous directing credits include episodes of The Last Man on Earth, Shrill, A.P. Bio, and segments of Saturday Night Live – the latter of which may explain why SNL‘s Chris Redd pops up here in a seemingly small role. SNL guru Lorne Michaels is producing alongside Erin David (MacGruber).

Every generation has its “regular kids fight against dangerous outside forces” movie, with films like Monster Squad, Fright Night, and Attack the Block serving as strong examples of how things can go well with the right execution in that subgenre. It seems like Rodriguez isn’t interested in just focusing on horror or comedy in his entry, but blending the two and throwing in a dash of social commentary.

And is it just me, or is there a tiny bit of a Do the Right Thing vibe here? The girl in the opening strikes me as a potential evolution of Samuel L. Jackson’s Mister Señor Love Daddy DJ character, and Chris Redd and his pal may even end up being a version of Sweet Dick Willie and the rest of the guys posted up on the corner in Spike Lee’s movie. I’m obviously not suggesting that a film called Vampires vs. The Bronx will be nearly as impactful as Do the Right Thing, which is one of the greatest American movies of the past 50 years – just wondering if Lee’s masterpiece served as a loose inspiration for some of this film’s character types.

The mystery of The Blair Witch Project is maybe one left buried deep in the Black Hills Forest, but you’ll get a chance to return to those dark woods and investigate the mystery of the titular witch with the new Hunt a  Killer Horror: Blair Witch tabletop game. Hunt a Killer, the makers of the popular mystery, sci-fi, and horror-themed role-playing games, are debuting a Blair Witch tabletop game, just in time for spooky season.

Hunt a Killer announced that it is releasing a new tabletop role-playing game titled Hunt a Killer Horror: Blair Witch, which will allow players to “discover the frightening history of the Blair Witch for themselves.” The game, released in partnership with Lionsgate, is the first time Hunt a Killer is partnering with an entertainment company on a storyline, which incorporates the Blair Witch universe into their line of horror-themed games. The game will be part of Hunt A Killer’s subscription-based offerings, granting players the opportunity to become members in their gaming community.

Here is the synopsis for Hunt a Killer Horror: Blair Witch:

In this new season, players become detectives to solve a missing persons case near the infamous Black Hills Forest. The storyline begins with an introduction to Rosemary Kent, a woman who lives near the edge of the forest and is looking for help to find her missing son. Over the course of six boxed episodes, players will investigate the mysterious woods and learn about any disappearances, while finding out more about the powerful forces that reside there. From there they must piece together the clues, face the horror of the Blair Witch and those who serve her, and find out if they can survive the woods.

Each month, members will receive a new boxed episode, which they must work to unfold by solving a variety of cryptic documents, audio recordings, and puzzles. At the end of the season, the clues will help players solve the case. Players will also have access to resources and the Hunt a Killer private Facebook community to ask for tips and play alongside others. Hopefully, players will end up with a better fate than the people in the Blair Witch movies.

‘Uglies’ Movie Coming From Netflix, Directed by McG and Starring Joey King

It’s been a while since a dystopian YA novel got itself a film adaptation, so here comes Uglies! McG is set to direct the film based on the Scott Westerfeld book set in a future where everyone is forced to have extreme cosmetic surgery when they reach the age of 16. Joey King is set to star in the movie, which is headed to Netflix. Uglies spawned three sequels: Pretties, Specials, and Extras, so there’s a good chance Netflix wants to launch a franchise here.

Deadline says that Netflix is set to turn Uglies into a film directed by McG and starring Joey King. I’m not entirely sure why Netflix keeps throwing work at Mr. McG, but there are some mysteries we’ll never solve, I guess. Published in 2005, Uglies is a dystopian YA story with elements that sound culled from other dystopian YA stories, with a little extreme plastic surgery thrown in for good measure:

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. In just a few weeks she’ll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunning pretty. And as a pretty, she’ll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun. But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world—and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. Tally’s choice will change her world forever….

King will play Tall. Per Deadline, “King has long been a fan of the series and was aggressive in pursuing the lead role once Netflix acquired the rights to the novel.” The book also spawned sequels, so don’t be surprised if Netflix turns this into a whole franchise. King and McG both have a history with the streaming service: King starred in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth movies, while McG’s last three titles – The Babysitter, The Rim of the World, and The Babysitter: Killer Queen – were all Netflix films.

A potential Uglies film has been knocking around for a few years now. 20th Century Fox and producer John Davis bought the rights to the book back in 2006, with hopes of releasing the film in 2011. That never happened, obviously. And at some point the rights lapsed, opening the door for Netflix to swoop in. Krista Vernoff, a writer on Grey’s Anatomy, Shameless, and more, will tackle the screenplay.

‘Action U.S.A.’ Trailer: The Explosive, Long Lost 1980s Film is Finally Available

If you’ve seen and enjoyed ridiculous B-movies in the vein of Hard Ticket to Hawaii, it’s imperative that you put Action U.S.A. on your radar.

In 1989, stuntman John Stewart made his directorial debut with his own outrageous, over-the-top piece of high-octane filmmaking, full of insane practical stunts and without a speck of CGI in sight. The movie languished in obscurity…until now. Check out the trailer below.

Action U.S.A. made its debut at this year’s virtual Fantastic Fest, who describes it like this:

When you think of the broad panorama of VHS-era action, your mind detonates with fast cars, helicopter chases, profanity, nudity, cocaine-ity, fisticuffs, stolen diamonds, FBI agents, defenestration, shotgun castration, men on fire and Casio soundtracks. But what if we told you there’s one single movie that impossibly squeezes all of the above into 89 minutes, not to mention sunroof gunfights, a car jumping over a school bus packed with screaming children, honkytonk brawlin’, bathroom kissin’, plus exploding cars, houses AND recreational vehicles?

Since it’s not exactly clear from the trailer what the plot is, let’s break it down. When the mob murders her boyfriend (Rod Shaft), a woman (Barri Murphy) has to be transported to federal headquarters by a reluctant FBI agent (Gregory Scott Cummins). But the journey won’t be easy, and they’re challenged at every turn by baddies played by William Smith, Cameron Mitchell, Ross Hagen, and more, putting them through a gauntlet of bullets and blood as they desperately try to stay alive. It’s 89 minutes of total action movie excess, and a window into the mind of an ambitious madman behind the camera. It reminds me of similarly bonkers movies like Miami Connection and Dangerous Men, films that were unearthed and given new life by Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of Alamo Drafthouse. (If any of this sounds interesting to you, make sure to watch both of those movies as well – they’re really fun.)

The best part? You can watch Action U.S.A. right now. The movie is available to rent for $9.99 exclusively on Alamo on Demand, and will be accessible on that platform until midnight on October 12, 2020.

Alamo Drafthouse, the theater chain associated with Fantastic Fest, is embroiled in a scandal that has dismantled the company’s reputation as one of the coolest theater chains in the country. Allegations of sexual harassment, unsafe work environments, and a boy’s club culture have been lobbied at Drafthouse, and those reports paint a picture of a company in desperate need of systemic change. John Stewart, the director of Action U.S.A., had nothing to do with any of that, so we don’t think he should be punished for having his movie featured on an Alamo-related platform. We’ll continue to monitor this situation and decide whether to cover Drafthouse-related news stories on a case by case basis.
