‘Safety’ Trailer: Disney+ Debuts an Inspirational True-Life Football Drama

Disney is never lacking in inspirational true-life stories, and now, neither will Disney+. The Disney streaming platform released the trailer for its latest original film, Safety, an inspirational sports drama based on the true story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey and how he raised his 11-year-old brother while becoming a football star. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but in the case of Disney+’s new original film, Safety, it takes a college football team. The upcoming inspirational sports drama is “inspired by the empowering true story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey, a young man facing a series of challenging circumstances, whose dedication and persistence help him to triumph over repeated adversities. Aided by his teammates and the Clemson community, he succeeds on the field while simultaneously raising and caring for his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr.”

Directed by Reginald Hudlin (Marshall) from a screenplay by Nick Santora (The Most Dangerous Game,   The Fugitive), Safety stars Jay Reeves (All American, The Tax Collector) as Ray and newcomer Thaddeus J. Mixson as his brother Fahmarr. The cast is rounded out by Corinne Foxx, Matthew Glave, Hunter Sansone, Amanda Warren, Miles Burris, Isaac Bell, Elijah Bell, and James Badge Dale.  It is and produced by Mark Ciardi (Secretariat) and Gordon Gray (The Rookie ) with Douglas S. Jones and Campbell McIinnis serving as executive producers.

In a statement, Hudlin said, “Safety is a movie about brotherhood and coming together for the greater good, which is a message our society needs right now.  It’s the story of a young man stuck in a situation where failure is not an option. Through sheer force of will, he does the impossible, which inspires the whole community around him to do the same.  It’s a movie I can’t wait to watch with my family on Disney+ on December 11th, and for families everywhere to do the same.”

Producer Mark Ciardi added, “For over a decade, I’ve dreamed of bringing Ray’s incredible story to the screen, and now that it’s ready, I’m thrilled that Disney+ is making it available for families to enjoy together during the holidays.”

The film looks like a good, old-fashioned inspirational sports drama, which means it’s perfect for the family-friendly base that Disney+ caters to. I can’t say I’m personally all that interested in Safety, but there must be some intersection of Disney fans and Clemson fans for whom this movie is specifically made.

Safety will debut exclusively on Disney+ on Friday, December 11, 2020.

HBO Max to Air Episodes of ‘Titans,’ ‘Flight Attendant’ on TNT, TBS, truTV Over Thanksgiving

Once a streaming platform has been launched, you don’t quite expect its creators to go back to traditional TV programming, but if Netflix can do it, so can HBO Max. But HBO Max is only heading to television for a special Thanksgiving event: the streaming platform is teaming up with WarnerMedia TV channels to bring Max Originals like Titans and The Flight Attendant, and marathons of DC movies and Friends to TNT, TBS, and truTV.

Nothing says Thanksgiving like plopping in front of the TV with a full belly. And HBO Max is getting in the holiday mood with “Thanksgiving at HBO Max,” a curated crossover programming event at TNT, TBS, and truTV that will give audiences a taste of the streamer’s library of titles.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the nearly 140 million collective viewers at all three channels will get to sample new Max Originals like Titans and The Flight Attendant, in the show’s TV debut, as well as popular DC films like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, and Wonder Woman. HBO Max will also be debuting teases of its upcoming Melissa McCarthy comedy film Superintelligence. And of course, plenty of Friends marathons. It will be the chance for viewers to “receive an entire week of HBO Max for free.”

Darkwing Duck Reboot In Development At Disney Plus - Report

If you grew up in the 1990s, you might have fond memories of the Disney Afternoon programming block, which included classic Disney cartoons like Ducktales, Talespin, Gargoyles, and--most importantly--Darkwing Duck. Now, Disney's vigilante superhero is coming back on Disney+, according to a report from Variety.

A reboot of the animated series is in early development and, while a writer has not been found, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Alex McAtee will produce. Rogen and Goldberg are also developing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles CG-animated feature.

Darkwing Duck debuted in 1991, with 91 episodes airing across three seasons. Most of us Elder Millennials remember Darkwing Duck from the aforementioned syndicated Disney Afternoon animation block.

Destiny 2 Beyond Light - Where To Find Entropic Shards To Earn Your Stasis Aspect

Working through the story campaign of Beyond Light, Destiny 2's latest expansion, will earn you the new Stasis ability--a power that lets you slow and freeze enemies to take them out of the fight and deal massive damage. To get the most out of the new abilities, though, you'll need Aspects, equippable mods that give your Stasis subclass new abilities.

Your first Aspect comes from a quest late in the Beyond Light campaign, and you'll need to hunt down collectibles called Entropic Shards to complete it. We've run down everything you need to do and to know in order to unlock your first Stasis Aspect, while also detailing the locations of every Entropic Shard currently found on Europa.

Unlock Stasis Aspects By Getting The Aspect Of Control Quest

First, work your way through the Beyond Light campaign. Defeat Eramis and continue on the Exo Stranger's Born in Darkness quests until you've fully unlocked the Stasis subclass and its three grenades. There are a lot of parts to this, so it'll take a bit.

‘Island of Dr. Moreau’ TV Series Will Update the Sci-Fi Story For the 21st Century

H.G. Wells’ classic The Island of Dr. Moreau is being turned into a TV series by Gunpowder & Sky and their sci-fi label DUST. The series, called Moreau, reimagines Wells’ tale of man tampering in god’s domain for the 21st century, with X-Men: First Class writer Zack Stentz attached to write the series. That’s all well and good, but will this Island of Dr. Moreau TV series be as bonkers as the Island of Dr. Moreau movie with Marlon Brando? I think not.

Gunpowder & Sky’s sci-fi label DUST are developing an Island of Dr. Moreau TV series called Moreau that will put a modern spin on the H.G. Wells novel. The show “focuses on world-renowned scientist Dr. Jessica Moreau, whose pioneering work in genetic engineering catches the eye of a billionaire backer willing to stop at nothing to reach the next step of human evolution.”

In the Wells book, “Shipwrecked in the south Pacific Ocean, Englishman Edward Prendick awakens aboard a ship where a man named Montgomery and his beastly looking servant were transporting animal cargo. Soon, they arrive on an island and more and more of these bizarre humanlike creatures appear. Prendick senses a sinister secret to the island after he meets with the owner, a one Dr. Moreau.”

The book has been adapted to the screen before, notably in 1932 with Island of Lost Souls starring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi, and of course, a 1996 fiasco that starred Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. Richard Stanley was originally attached to helm that adaptation but was eventually fired and replaced by John Frankenheimer. Pretty much every single thing that could go wrong with a movie still went wrong even after Stanley was fired, and the film was torn apart by critics and flopped at the box office. All of this was chronicled in the documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau.

Zack Stentz, whose credits include X-Men: First Class, Thor, and more, is attached to write the show. “The double helix wasn’t even a twinkle in Watson & Crick’s eye when H.G. Wells first wrote The Island of Dr. Moreau, but his 1896 novel proved astonishingly prescient about how unlocking the secrets of DNA would open the door to humanity playing God with the natural world in strange and frightening ways,” said Stentz. “And now, in the shadow of the CRISPR revolution, it felt like the perfect time to revisit Moreau and bring it into our own 21st Century world of transgenic animals, designer babies and other scientific advances Wells never could have dreamed of. I’m delighted to be working with Eric, Geoff & the Gunpowder & Sky team to welcome a whole new generation to the good doctor’s terrifying island.”

Geoffrey James Clark, Executive Producer, Gunpowder & Sky, added: “This series gives us a chance to work with Zack, one of the most prolific writers in the business. We couldn’t have genetically engineered a better writer for this project and can’t wait to take sci-fi fans on a wild ride with Zack driving.”

‘American Horror Story’ Season 10 Poster Arrives With ‘American Horror Stories’ Details

Sooner or later we need to have a serious discussion about how we, as a society, allowed American Horror Story to last for 10 seasons. Not only that, but the show will now have its own spin-off – American Horror Stories. Ahead of the premieres of both shows, creator Ryan Murphy has revealed a fang-filled new American Horror Story season 10 poster along with American Horror Stories details.

Behold! The poster for American Horror Story season 10! At first glance I thought this was something involving dentistry, what with the teeth and all. But no, it’s just a very fangy person getting their tongue tattooed. What can this tell us about the new season? I have no idea. Is it about teeth? Is it about tattoo artists? Is it about Ryan Murphy laughing all the way to the bank as he unleashes more glitzy, campy mediocrity upon us? We’ll see! Murphy previously posted a teaser poster that featured some hands clutching a cliff overlooking some water, with the caption “Things are beginning to wash up on shore.”

Series regular Sarah Paulson is back for season 10, because of course she is. Other returning cast members include Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Finn Wittrock, Lily Rabe, Leslie Grossman, Adina Porter, and Angelica Ross. Creator Ryan Murphy shared that new poster you see above, and he also shared this poster for the spin-off series American Horror Stories.

We knew the spin-off series was going to feature standalone, self-contained episodes. With the new poster, Murphy also added: “We are doing 16 one hour stand-alone episodes delving into horror myths, legends and lore…many of these episodes will feature AHS stars you know and love. More to follow…”

Look, I know people love this show, but I want to counter that with this: maybe they don’t? It just seems to me that every time a new American Horror Story season rolls around, fans get excited. Then the season starts, and by the third or fourth episode, everyone seems to be in agreement that what they’re watching is actually kind of awful. And yet…they keep coming back for more. It’s a strange phenomenon and one day I hope scientists study it so I can understand just what the hell is going on here.

Anyway, American Horror Story season 10 will arrive on FX in 2021. As for American Horror Stories, there’s no concrete date for that yet, but you can expect to find it on FX as well, at some point.

Half-Life: Alyx Now Has Audio Commentary From The Devs

Half-Life: Alyx has received a major update, adding audio commentary from the game's development team. The VR game, which released in March this year, is now full of anecdotes and information about its own development process.

When commentary is turned on, tracks will appear throughout the game as headphone nodes, which you can pick up and "wear" by putting them on your head. The update is free for all owners of the game.

There are three hours of commentary in total, and in the trailer below you can hear some snippets. According to the update notes, this commentary was delayed when COVID-19 made recording it all in-studio impossible. "Like much of the world, we are all working from home, which means that rather than using our comfortable high-quality recording studio at the office, we have been recording our commentary voice overs in closets and blanket forts around greater Seattle," it says.

How To Best Manage PS5 Storage Space

Sony's PlayStation 5 is out now, and it features a whole suite of games that show off what's to come with the next-generation of 4K media and gaming. In addition to new releases like Demon's Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Astro's Playroom, the PS5 also supports an extensive list of PS4 games available for backwards compatible play. Simply put, the PS5 at launch does not have a shortage of games to play and download. However, with an extensive library of games, most of which are continuing the trend of games with large files sizes, you'll have to be a bit more mindful about managing your data.

The PS5 comes with a 825GB SSD for storage, about 667GB of which is free for you to use. With the growing size of games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War--which sits around 200GB--the available real estate in your PS5 can quickly fill up. That's a problem, because PS5 games must be installed to the internal drive, and cannot be moved to external storage. (Backwards-compatible games can be stored and played externally.) Currently, you cannot expand your internal storage at this time, but Sony has stated that PS5 owners will be able to sometime in the future. With this issue in mind, we wanted to offer some tips on how best to optimize and maximize your storage space for your new PlayStation 5.

PS Plus Collection Can Be Played On PS4 After Claiming On PS5

The PlayStation 5 is now available in many regions, and new users will likely be jumping into the PlayStation Plus section of the console's store to nab the PlayStation Plus Collection. The Collection includes numerous PS4 games that you can play on PS5--and, as it turns out, on PS4, too.

GameSpot can confirm, after conducting tests, that once the Collection has been claimed on a PlayStation 5 the games can be played on a PS4. That means that you'll still need to get your hands on a PS5 to access the Collection, but if you've kept your PS4 you can install the games on there afterwards.

If you want to free up some space on the PS5's limited SSD, or set up your PS4 in another room of your home, this could be very handy indeed.

‘Another Round’ Trailer: Mads Mikkelsen Gets Drunk for Science

During uncertain times like this, it’s tempting to stay drunk all the time. So Mads Mikkelsen has the right idea in the upcoming Danish-Swedish comedy-drama Another Round, which follows a group of high school teachers who decide to get a little bit buzzed every day…for science. Written by Thomas Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm, Another Round stars Mikkelsen as one of a group of high school teachers who embark on an odd experiment: drink enough every day to keep a blood alcohol content level of .05% to see how it affects their behavior. Spoilers: they all have a blast. But emboldened by their newfound confidence, they take the experiment too far, and it begins to affect their personal and professional lives.

Vinterberg and Lindholn, who both wrote the acclaimed 2012 Danish film The Hunt, which starred Mikkelsen as a teacher accused of sexually abusing a student, are typically known for more serious fare — Vinterberg in particular has helmed prestige flicks like Far From the Madding Crowd and a submarine disaster thriller called The Command. But Another Round looks like it has a touch of dry Danish comedy, with some offbeat humor and jokes sprinkled throughout a sobering drama about, well, being sober.

Another Round made the 2020 Cannes Film Festival Official Selection and world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was a hit with critics, who raved about Mikkelsen’s performance in particular. Mikkelsen, who is best known Stateside for his roles in NBC’s Hannibal, Marvel’s Doctor Strange, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, leads a cast that includes Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, Magnus Millang, Maria Bonnevie, Susse Wold, and Helene Reingaard Neumann.

Here is the synopsis for Another Round:

Four friends, all teachers at various stages of middle age, are stuck in a rut. Unable to share their passions either at school or at home, they embark on an audacious experiment from an obscure philosopher: to see if a constant level of alcohol in their blood will help them find greater freedom and happiness. At first they each find a new-found zest, but as the gang pushes their experiment further, issues that have been simmering for years come to a head and the men are faced with a choice: reckon with their behavior or continue on the same course.

Another Round hits theaters December 4, 2020 and arrives on digital December 18, 2020.

‘Mank’: It’s Once Again Time to Point Out David Fincher Shoots Many Takes

You know the drill: anytime there’s a new David Fincher movie we are all required by law to talk about how many takes he shot. Cast members of the film in question come forward and say, “I shot a lot of takes!” We report it. Fincher rolls his eyes. Then we move on, only to revisit the story again whenever Fincher gets around to making another movie. After taking a hiatus from feature films, Fincher is back this year with Mank, and sure enough, stories are starting to trickle in about Fincher and all his damn scene takes.

We’ve been here before. Over the summer, I wrote up a story about Mank cast member Amanda Seyfried claiming that one of her scenes required something like 200 takes and about an entire week to film. “I was part of scenes with tons of people in it and we would do it for an entire week,” Seyfried said. “I can’t tell you how many takes we did, but I would guess 200, maybe I could be wrong and could be way off. Um, I could be underestimating by five days of one scene when I didn’t have one line… ‘You think I can just relax?’ No, because there are probably about nine or 10 different camera angles that had been on me at one point.”

To be clear: there’s a good chance Seyfried is exaggerating a bit. But multiple Fincher takes have become a gold standard at this point. And a new issue of Total Film magazine has more people involved with Mank talking about Fincher and his many, many, many takes. “We did take after take after take after take,” said Charles Dance, who plays William Randolph Hearst in the film. “And [Mank star Gary Oldman] said to David at one point, ‘David, I’ve done this scene a hundred fucking times.’ And Fincher said, ‘Yeah, I know, but this is 101. Reset!'”

In the same issue, Fincher doesn’t deny this. “I’m fairly didactic about, ‘These are the things that the scene needs to accomplish for me, and we will continue to play, to look for ways to underline these ideas that are as subtle as we can make them,'” the director said, adding:

“It’s a hard thing to say to actors, ‘I want a cohesive, great performance in the master [shot].’ And then, ‘I want a cohesive, great performance in the alternate master.’ And then, ‘I want a cohesive, great performance in the over-the-shoulder. And I want a cohesive, great performance in his over-the-shoulder on to you. And I want the singles.’ Because I don’t want to cut a scene based on where you are at personally on Tuesday. I don’t think I could go into the edit room knowing that I was going to have to cut around somebody who didn’t deliver. Part of it is you cast really great people and get the fuck out of the way.”

Fincher has addressed this sort of thing before. “I like the idea that the first three takes, you’re just rehearsing,” he said in an interview back in 2009, and when the interviewer pointed out that Fincher was notorious for his many takes, the filmmaker countered: “This is bullshit. Look, you’re spending $150m, unbelievable amounts of money to ship period vehicles from Illinois down to Louisiana and get them working. There are teams of people making these cars work, all this stuff. So you get there and you’re going to shoot three takes and then go home?”

He also added: “Some [actors] resent it and go, ‘My best stuff was when I had a lot of energy after my mochaccino and now my energy’s gone,’ but a lot of actors work it out in their heads, they figure it out and have an idea of what they’re going to do. I can see that and I like to move past that, to where they’ve forgotten why they came, or who they are. And it is about choreography, where the eye of the audience finds that person and that person is revealed and they come forward and say their line. All those things in concert. So, you spend all that money to get there, so you might as well make sure you got it.”

In other words: Fincher is going to shoot as many damn takes as he wants until he gets exactly what he wants, and in his mind, to do otherwise would be a waste. So it goes. Anyway, Mank – which is very good – will arrive on Netflix December 4 following a limited theatrical release starting November 13, so soon you’ll be able to see how all those many Fincher takes worked out.

Rocket League Gets A Nice Boost On PS5 & Xbox Series X/S

Developer Psyonix has revealed that Rocket League will get some improvements on Xbox Series X|S and PS5, which went live alongside the release of Microsoft and Sony's next-gen consoles. It's a pretty nice boost, too.

According to a blog post, on both the Xbox Series X|S and PS5, Rocket League will have "significantly faster load times and improved splitscreen performance." Additionally, Rocket League on PS5 plays at 4K resolution at 60fps with HDR. Xbox Series S is 1080p resolution at 60fps with HDR, and Xbox Series X is 4K resolution at 60fps with HDR.

Though it wasn't ready for the launch of Xbox Series X|S, both consoles will support a new feature for Rocket League that's coming "later this year." This update is not scheduled for PS5.

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure, From Monument Valley Dev, Announces December Release In Gorgeous Trailer

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure has released a full gameplay trailer, showing off the beautiful little island players will be able to explore soon on PC and iOS. The game, which releases for Apple Arcade and Steam on December 11, comes from Monument Valley developer Ustwo Games.

The game, first revealed in July, casts players as the titular Alba as she visits the Mediterranean island her grandparents live on. As she explores, Alba realizes that the island's animals are in danger, and sets about helping them.

Netflix Doesn't Cancel More Shows Than Other Networks Or Studios, It Says

It sure seems like Netflix cancels a lot of shows. We listed 13 canceled Netflix shows in August, and then 11 more by the time we revisited the question in November. But Netflix says it's no different from other services.

Netflix's Global Head of TV, Bela Bajaria, said at the Paley International Council Summit (via Deadline) that the service renews two thirds of its shows.

"If you look at season twos and more, we actually have a renewal rate of 67%, which is industry standard," Bajaria said. "We also do make a large amount of first season shows, which sometimes feels that we have more first season cancelations, but if you look at the renewal rate, it's really strong."

Why Vince Vaughn Wanted To Play A Teen Girl In Freaky

In Freaky, Vince Vaughn takes on the role of a lifetime: a teenage girl. The film, from Blumhouse and directed by Happy Death Day's Chris Landon, is essentially a slasher version of Freaky Friday. Freaky sees high school student Millie (Katheryn Newton) swapping bodies with demented serial killer the Blissfield Butcher (Vaughn).

On the surface, the premise alone has a lot of great comedic potential. Still, while Vaughn was Landon's first choice for the role, the director wasn't expecting him to be interested.

"He really was it for me. There were so many boxes that needed to be ticked here," Landon explained. "And it was tricky because I needed somebody that was physically intimidating. I needed someone who was convincingly scary. I needed someone who had really strong acting chops, and someone who's charming and comedic. There's so many things that Vince has to be in this movie and he's, like, literally the only dude that can do all of it. And so we sent the script to him first. And I, honestly, was prepared for him to pass."
