‘The House With a Clock in Its Walls’ Director Eli Roth Explains His Transition to Family Films

House With a Clock in Its Walls Eli Roth

Eli Roth isn’t anyone’s idea of a family filmmaker, and yet the director of Cabin Fever has a new PG-rated adventure hitting theaters soon. The House With a Clock in Its Walls is Roth’s first non-R-rated movie, adapted from children’s book of the same name. So how did the guy who made Hostel end up making a family-friendly film? In a new interview, Roth says the progression was natural, and that Clock in Its Walls harkens back to old school Amblin movies.

Back when Eli Roth was at the height of his popularity, I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted he’d go on to make a PG family film. And yet here we are, with The House With a Clock in Its Walls hitting theaters next month. Roth sat down with Vulture to explain how this strange development happened. “In my mind, it’s a natural progression,” the filmmaker said. “When you see the movie, you’ll see stuff from my other movies — just done in the PG version of it, in a very subversive way.”

Based on the book by John Bellairs, The House With a Clock in Its Walls follows 10-year-old Lewis, who “goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house that contains a mysterious ticktock noise. When Lewis accidentally awakens the dead, the town’s sleepy facade magically springs to life with a secret world of witches and warlocks.” I’ll confess that I am not an Eli Roth fan. But the trailers for this film look great, loaded with a wonderful Halloween-themed atmosphere that’s hard for me to resist. This is the first Eli Roth film I’m actually excited to see – and I mean ever. In the entire history of his career, his first PG-rated movie is the one that finally has caught my interest.

Roth tells Vulture that he’s “always wanted” to do his version of a kids’ movie – something akin to “Time Bandits or Beetlejuice or Gremlins or Goonies,” and Amblin movies in general. He adds:

“Nobody does it better than those early Spielberg movies. There was a danger. The first 20 minutes of E.T.were very scary when you were a kid. When E.T. is dying? You believe that E.T.’s dead! The movie goes dark and that’s what makes the best children’s movies. That’s what makes them resonate with children. It gives them their first experience of being scared, but in a really fun, fantastic way.”

The director is definitely saying all the right things here. The House With a Clock in Its Walls is an Amblin production, which means it has a touch of Spielberg in it. I have no illusions that Clock in Its Walls will be anywhere near as good as E.T., but if Roth can capture just a fraction of that early Spielbergian magic, his movie is going to be in good shape. “They really wanted to relaunch what Amblin was in the ’80s,” Roth says. “Steven [Spielberg] couldn’t have been more supportive of me… Steven said to me, ‘Make it scary.’ He said, ‘Kids want to be scared. You gotta make it scary.'”

Again: this all sounds great. I have high hopes for The House With a Clock in Its Walls, and if it turns out to be good, perhaps Eli Roth should’ve been making PG-rated movies all along.

‘Benedetta’ Image Reveals First Look at Paul Verhoeven’s New Lesbian Nun Film

Benedetta Image

Paul Verhoeven, director of RoboCopStarship TroopersElle and more, has a new film: Benedetta. Set in the 17th century, Benedetta follows a lesbian nun who was prone to visions and displayed the stigmata – supernatural wounds that mimic the injuries inflicted on Jesus during the crucifixion. You can see the first official Benedetta image below.

A movie about a mystical lesbian nun sounds right up Paul Verhoeven’s alley, so we should all have high hopes for Benedetta. The first Benedetta image shows Virginie Efira in character as the 17th century nun, flanked by soldiers:

Virginie Efira Benedetta

Verhoeven’s film is adapted from Judith C. Brown’s book Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy (which I think we can all agree is a much better title than Benedetta). Here’s the book’s synopsis:

Born of well-to-do parents, Benedetta Carlini entered the convent at the age of nine. At twenty-three, she began to have visions of both a religious and erotic nature. Benedetta was elected abbess due largely to these visions, but later aroused suspicions by claiming to have had supernatural contacts with Christ. During the course of an investigation, church authorities not only found that she had faked her visions and stigmata, but uncovered evidence of a lesbian affair with another nun, Bartolomeo. The story of the relationship between the two nuns and of Benedetta’s fall from an abbess to an outcast is revealed in surprisingly candid archival documents and retold here with a fine sense of drama.

There are two possible ways to tell this story. One is the serious, somewhat dry costume-drama/biopic approach. Another is to go for something somewhat exploitative, like Ken Russell’s The Devils. Knowing Verhoeven’s past work, I think I have a pretty good idea which approach he’s going to take here. No matter how it turns out, though, I’m sure it’ll be a must-see. Verhoeven hasn’t lost a step in the later half of his career, as his recent film Elle proves.

The filmmaker also has a background in religious studies, which likely contributed to his interest in the material. He’s a member of the Jesus Seminar, a group that studies the historicity of the life of Jesus Christ. Not only does Verhoeven belong to the group, he’s also the only member without a degree in biblical studies. Verhoeven even wrote a book about Jesus– Jesus of Nazareth, published in 2011. The book is Verehoven’s attempt to move beyond the mythical Jesus of the Bible and discover what the real flesh and blood man might have been like. It’s a fascinating book, and not at all dry like some scholarly texts can be.

Benedetta also stars Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia, Lambert Wilson, Olivier Rabourdin and Louise Chevillotte. Verhoeven is currently shooting in Italy, with plans to release the movie in France in 2019. An American release date will no doubt follow.

‘Shining’ Sequel ‘Doctor Sleep’ Casts Kyliegh Curran as Danny Torrance’s Niece

doctor sleep cast

The Doctor Sleep cast has locked down a pivotal role. Young actress Kyliegh Curran will play Abra Stone in the Shining sequel from director Mike Flanagan. Abra is the long-lost granddaughter of Shining character Jack Torrance. Like Jack’s son Danny, she also possess the “shining” psychic abilities. Curran joins a cast that includes Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson.

Deadline broke the news about Curran’s casting. Her character, Abra Stone, is one of the main characters of Stephen King’s novel – her psychic abilities make her the main target of the True Knot, a gang of nomadic “psychic vampires” who prey on individuals who possess the shining. In the Doctor Sleep novel, King reveals that Jack Torrance – the main character of The Shining – had an affair with his teaching assistant, Sandy Reynolds. The affair produced a child – Lucy. Lucy, in turn, gave birth to Abra. That makes Abra the niece of Danny Torrance, the psychic kid from The Shining and the main character of Doctor Sleep. Curran is relative newcomer, with only one other acting credit to her name – the 2017 film I Can I Will I Did. Deadline says at least 800 girls (!) were considered for the part of Abra, but Curran beat them all.

In Doctor Sleep, Danny is all grown-up, and still traumatized by the events at the Overlook Hotel. Much like his father before him, he struggles with alcoholism. But the bottle is the least of his problems, as he must protect Abra from the True Knot and its leader, Rose the Hat. Ewan McGregor is playing Danny, while Rebecca Ferguson is playing Rose. Other cast members include Carl Lumbly, Alex Essoe and Westworld breakout Zarn McClarnon.

Doctor Sleep is definitely not one of King’s best novels. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s kind of bad. But I remain optimistic about this film adaptation, due to the fact that Mike Flanagan is at the helm. Flanagan is one of the best horror filmmakers working today, crafting original, exciting scary movies that don’t adhere to the normal horror movie rules. This isn’t his first time tackling a King project, either. He turned King’s hard-to-adapt book Gerald’s Game into a surprisingly great movie for Netflix. Also promising: Flanagan has rewrote the script previously penned by Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman penned the screenplay for the terrible Dark Tower adaptation, so the fact that Flanagan has come in and taken over script duties gives me some hope.

I still remain uncertain about how they’re going to market this movie. So far, everyone involved with the project is content to refer to it as “the sequel to The Shining.” Which it technically is. But here’s the thing: it’s the sequel to The Shining novel, not Stanley Kubrick’s much-different film adaptation. If audiences go into this expecting a movie that builds on Kubrick’s material, they’re going to be in or a big surprise.

Doctor Sleep will hit theaters on January 24, 2020.

Danny Boyle’s Musical Comedy Involves the Only Person in the World to Remember The Beatles

danny boyle musical

Now that director Danny Boyle has left the director’s chair of James Bond 25, the versatile filmmaker is free to focus his time on the post-production process for his first musical, an untitled movie that features EastEnders star Himesh Patel, Saturday Night Live breakout Kate McKinnon, and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again‘s Lily James.

The film also stars musician Ed Sheeran playing himself, and in a new interview, Sheeran has revealed some new details about Boyle’s still-untitled musical comedy and what it has to do with the music of The Beatles.

In an interview with the Associated Press (via The Playlist), Sheeran says that Patel plays a character who wakes up to discover he’s the only person on the planet who remembers the music of The Beatles, so he uses those songs to become a superstar musician himself. Sheeran elaborated:

“And then I discover him and take him on tour. Then he gets much, much bigger than me through doing stuff. Yeah, it’s very clever. I got to actually kind of learn how to act… With the ‘Game of Thrones’ thing, that was literally me popping in for a day and making a cameo. Or ‘Bastard Executioner’ was me popping in for a day. But this was like full days on set, like full 12-hour days.”

The 27-year-old Sheeran wrapped his portion of filming earlier this year during the middle of one of his tours, and though this is his first major film role, he doesn’t sound too worried because the part he played is a familiar one for him:

“They shot it around loads of my gigs. So it was a very intense two months. Because I would have four days of gigging and then three days of shooting a film. I was playing myself, so I don’t think I was that bad. There wasn’t much to (mess) up.”

I spoke with Boyle years ago about the way he jumps between genres. “Each film becomes a fresh assault,” he told me, “and you can become evangelical in a way. Try to gather people around you and say, ‘How are we going to do this? How are we going to tell this story?’ [It’s] more to do with how you subvert the genre, because I don’t want them to feel like homages to something or an update of a particular genre. I want them to feel like their own identity.” I’m incredibly curious to see what he does with a musical comedy – especially one with a plot that almost sounds like it would work as an episode of The Twilight Zone.

This untitled movie is aiming for a release in September 2019, so we’ll keep you posted with more when we hear it.

There Will Be ‘Suspiria’ Post-Credits Scene, Director Luca Guadagnino Confirms

suspiria post-credits scene

When the credits begin rolling on Luca Guadagnino‘s Suspiria, wait a few minutes before you flee from your seat in terror. The director of the remake of the Dario Argento horror classic has revealed that there is a Suspiria post-credits scene that could plant the seeds for a greater Suspiria franchise in the future. Madame Blanc origin movie spin-off, here we come.

It’s almost a given that every horror movie must have at least one sequel. Even Argento’s surreal 1977 horror classic Suspiria received thematic sequels in the form of Argento’s “The Three Mothers” trilogy, whose films Inferno (1980) and The Mother of Tears (2007) were characterized by vibrant technicolor madness and stories centering around a triumvirate of ancient and evil witches.

But Guadagnino could build his own franchise within the Suspiria universe (the Suspiria cinematic universe?!), according to his post-credits stinger.

In an interview with Deadline, Guadagnino vaguely teased the post-credits scene, which follows a certain unnamed character. “The character is looking forward towards something. I think it would be interesting to know what that is…” Guadagnino said cryptically. He continued:

“At the beginning we were going to title the movie Suspiria: Part One but we didn’t want to give the impression of something that couldn’t stand alone. Truthfully, I’d be interested to explore the origin of Madame Blanc and Helena Markos and also the future of Susie Bannion in the world. So maybe. We’ll have to see how the movie goes.”

Guadagnino also expressed interest in continuing to expand the story of Tilda Swinton‘s character Madame Blanc based on “how audiences react.” I joked about a Madame Blanc origin movie, but based on Guadagnino’s statements, it could actually happen. But I wouldn’t be opposed to that, as I’ll take any excuse to see Guadagnino and Swinton work together again — Suspiria is their fourth collaboration after The Protagonists, I Am Love, and A Bigger Splash. Besides, it’s an excuse for Swinton to revert to her natural state as an ethereal witch goddess come to bless human beings with her presence.

Suspiria, which also stars Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth, and Chloë Grace Moretz, hits theaters on October 26, 2018.

A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the troupe’s artistic director, an ambitious young dancer and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare — others will finally wake up.

‘Blade 4’ and Other Possible ‘Blade’ Projects Teased by Wesley Snipes

Blade 4

We all want to see Wesley Snipes play Blade again, right? That’s a foregone conclusion? Well, we might get our wish. Snipes is teasing multiple projects that might see him returning to the role of everyone’s favorite Daywalker. What could they be? Blade 4? TV shows for Netflix? Snipes is vague on the specifics, but at least we can take solace in the fact that these projects are probably happening. Maybe.

It’s been 14 years since Wesley Snipes put on his leather trench coat and wraparound sunglasses to fight vampires, and frankly, that’s much too long. We as a society demand more Blade movies, damn it. If you ask me, people should be taking to the streets with huge picket signs reading “WE WANT BLADE.” Perhaps sensing the brewing national outrage over a severe lack of all-things-Blade, Wesley Snipes recently attempted to calm the waters by teasing two different projects that have the potential to bring Blade back from the dead. When asked by Vice if there was any chance of Blade 4, Snipes replied:

“There are a lot of conversations going around right now and we’re very blessed to have the enthusiasm and interest in something coming from that world again. We’ve created two projects that fit perfectly into this world and, when people see them, I think they’re only going to have a problem with deciding which one they love the most.”

As you can see, Snipes doesn’t clarify what these two projects are, which is a bit frustrating. I get it: the deal likely isn’t done yet and he doesn’t want to jump the gun. Still, I’d like to know just what it is that Snipes is teasing here. I personally hope it’s a movie, but who knows – it could be a Netflix show, or even something animated with Snipes voicing the character (please don’t let it be that; I want to see Snipes’ Blade in action).

There were plans to make Blade 4 after Blade: Trinity, as well as a possible Nightstalkers spin-off focused on Ryan Reynolds and Jess Biel’s characters from Trinity. But Blade: Trinity underperformed at the box office – it made close to what the first Blade took in, but less than Blade II. Things got ugly from there: Snipes sued New Line Cinema and director David Goyer, claiming that New Line failed to pay him his full salary and that the studio and Goyer cut him out of casting and filmmaking decisions. Since then, the rights to Blade have reverted back to Marvel Studios.

“All the main execs [at Marvel] and my team, we’ve been discussing for the past two years,” Snipes adds. “Everyone’s enthusiastic about it, everybody gets it. But they got a business to run and they gotta square the things that they gotta figure out before they can get to it, I guess. In the meantime, we got a business to run and our own slate of things to do so…But the next time you see something in [the Blade universe], mark my words: what we did before is child’s play compared to what we can do now.”

I’m optimistic about all this, but I’d be more optimistic if we all had a better idea of what it is Snipes is talking about. Would Blade as a character fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it now? I’d say no, but I also don’t really care. I just want to see Blade again, cutting vampires into dust with his sword. Is that so much to ask? Hopefully someone, somewhere, is working towards making this happen. But it might be a while before we know for sure, because some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill.

Woody Allen’s Next Movie ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ Shelved by Amazon

a rainy day in new york shelved

Woody Allen‘s next movie may never see the light of day. The prolific filmmaker recently announced he was taking time off from directing for the first time since 1981, and now comes word that Amazon has shelved his next film, A Rainy Day in New York. Amazon has yet to give a specific reason as to why they’re shelving the movie, but odds are it has a lot to do with the sexual abuse allegations allegations that have followed the director for decades.

Page Six reports that Woody Allen’s latest is being shelved indefinitely by Amazon. The film, titled A Rainy Day in New York, was finished last fall. Like most Allen movies, it has an impressive cast: Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Rebecca Hall, Jude Law, and Elle Fanning. In the past, actors were always eager to appear in one of Allen’s films – it was something of a right of passage, especially for up-and-comers. But things have changed considerably in the last year.

In 1992, Allen was accused of sexually assaulting his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow. Allen denied it, and no charges were ever filed. The allegations left a mark on Allen’s career…but not enough of one to stop him from working, or to stop people from wanting to work with him. He continued to pump out movies. Last year, however, the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements began to gather national attention. Allen’s own son Ronan Farrow was at the forefront of this, writing explosive stories on Harvey Weinstein and more.

Yesterday, word broke that Allen was taking time off for the first time in years. The source of the story (Page Six yet again) cited the #MeToo movement as a significant reason behind Allen’s sudden vacation:

The #MeToo movement, ironically spearheaded by [Allen’s] son Ronan Farrow, has hurt the auteur, who was accused by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, of sexually abusing her 26 years ago. Allen was never formally charged with a crime, although a judge in Allen’s child-custody case against Mia Farrow called Allen’s behavior toward Dylan “grossly inappropriate.”

At the time of that story, A Rainy Day in New York was still slated for a 2018 release date. Now, it’s off the calendar completely, indefinitely. Timothée Chalamet, Griffin Newman and Rebecca Hall previously announced they would donating their paychecks from the film to charities for victims of sexual abuse. The film was part of a big deal Amazon has signed with Allen – a deal that resulted in the series Crisis in Six Scenes and the film Wonder Wheel. Both projects were met with negative press questioning Amazon’s decision to work with Allen. Apparently Amazon has finally decided to listen by shelving A Rainy Day in New York, probably for good.

Star Wars Land Will Have a Cantina, Bringing Alcohol to Disneyland for the First Time Ever Publicly

Star Wars Land Cantina

We’re not even into fall yet, but it’s hard not to look forward to the summer of 2019. Not only will that give Marvel Cinematic Universe fans the answers they’ve been waiting for in Avengers 4, but that’s when Disney theme parks will be opening Star Wars Land. And today brings news of the perfect and inevitable addition to the theme park area inspired by a galaxy far, far away.

Disney Parks has announced that Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, which will be located on the planet of Batuu, will have a smuggler’s hot spot called Oga’s Cantina. And just like the cantina at Mos Eisley spaceport on Tatooine, it’s bound to be a wretched hive of scum and villainy, especially since it’s the first time alcohol will be allowed at Disneyland.

Star Wars Land Cantina Concept Art

Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Oga's Cantina

As you can see, the concept art for Oga’s Cantina isn’t too far of a departure from the cantina on Mos Eisley, though it does look a little more colorful and technologically advanced. Here’s how the cantina is officially described in the announcement from Disney Parks:

Visitors come to this notorious local watering hole to unwind, conduct shady business, and maybe even encounter a friend…or a foe. Run by an intriguing alien proprietor, Oga Garra, the cantina adheres to a strict code of conduct that tries to keep its unruly patrons in check. But with a history of being a smugglers’ safe haven and a popular stopping point for those seeking to avoid the authorities, you can bet that the cantina has a story or two to tell.

Oga’s Cantina is the kind of establishment that attracts some of the most interesting and disreputable characters in the galaxy. And you never know when a stormtrooper or a familiar face will show up. Patrons of the cantina come from across the galaxy to sample the famous concoctions created with exotic ingredients using “otherworldly” methods, served in unique vessels. With choices for kids and libations for adults, the cantina will make for a great stop!

Musical entertainment is provided courtesy of RX-24, the former StarSpeeder 3000 pilot droid we first met in Star Tours, who has re-envisioned himself as the cantina’s DJ. As quirky and talkative as ever, he’s still trying to do his best on the job. Get ready to listen to some unique music, taste the best drinks in the galaxy, and surround yourself with a colorful cast of characters. You never know what will happen at the cantina!

Frankly, I can’t wait to try the drinks from this cantina. The mention of “famous concoctions created with exotic ingredients using ‘otherworldly’ methods” makes me think they’ll be much more unique than regular alcoholic drinks with a Star Wars pun. Plus, the fact that they’re served in “unique vessels” makes me think we could be getting some intricate Star Wars themed drinkware. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a highball glass shaped like a lightsaber handle, though after a few of those, it might be difficult to fly the Millennium Falcon.

Unique food and drink stops have always been a staple of Disney Parks, and it’s nice to see that Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge will include that necessary park of the theme park experience. But the surprising part is the addition of alcohol. Until now, at Disneyland, only Club 33 and other private events have allowed for alcohol on park property. But that’s a change that has already been made at Disney World since the introduction of the “Be Our Guest” themed restaurant paved the way for beer and wine to be added to beer and wine to table-service menus, so it appears Disneyland is following suit.

Considering how interactive this Star Wars land is supposed to be, you just might encounter a bounty hunter who is out for your head at this cantina. Hopefully, you won’t be too hammered to deal with him. Just make sure to tip the bartender after you inevitably make a mess by shooting first.
