‘We Are Who We Are’ Trailer: Luca Guadagnino is Delivering Another Stirring Coming-of-Age Drama, This Time for TV

We Are Who We Are Trailer

Back in 2017, director Luca Guadagnino delivered the gorgeous coming-of-age romance Call Me By Your Name starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. Now the filmmaker is at it again, this time with Jack Dylan Grazer and Jordan Kristine Seamón starring in We Are Who We Are, a new HBO series following two American kids living on a military base in Italy. Each of these kids is going through the trials and tribulations of teenage life, which includes first-love, struggles with their own identity, and more. Based on the new We Are Who We Are trailer, this looks like it will let Guadagnino spread his wings into teenage angst even more than before.

We Are Who We Are Trailer

Here’s how HBO breaks down each of the main characters in Luca Guadagnino foray into television, an official selection of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight:

Jack Dylan Grazer stars as shy and introverted fourteen-year-old Fraser, who moves from New York to a military base in Veneto with his mothers, Sarah (Chloë Sevigny) and Maggie (Alice Braga), who are both in the U.S. Army. Tom Mercier (Jonathan) plays Sarah’s assistant.

Jordan Kristine Seamón stars as the seemingly bold and confident Caitlin, who has lived with her family on the base for several years and speaks Italian. Compared to her older brother Danny (Spence Moore II), Caitlin has the closer relationship with their father, Richard (Kid Cudi), and does not communicate well with her mother Jenny (Faith Alabi).

It appears that Caitlin is on the verge of coming to terms with her desire to not just be a soldier, but a male soldier. Meanwhile, Fraser seems to feel like an outcast who doesn’t really belong anywhere, but he takes solace in his friendship with Caitlin, which may also evolve into love. This feels like what HBO’s Euphoria would be like in the hands of Luca Guadagnino.

Outside of these two, there appears to be a lot going on with the supporting characters, which include Caitlin’s friend Britney (Francesca Scorsese, the daughter of Martin Scorsese), an outspoken, witty, sexually uninhibited girl; the cheerful and good-natured twentysomething soldier Craig (Corey Knight), his younger brother Sam (Ben Taylor), who just so happens to be Caitlin’s possessive boyfriend; Enrico (Sebastiano Pigazzi), a playful eighteen-year-old from Veneto who has a thing for Britney, and an Italian girl named Valentina (Beatrice Barichella).

Luca Guadagnino directs and produces We Are Who We Are, which he also wrote with Paolo Giordano and Francesca Manieri. Lorenzo Mieli is also executive producing for The Apartment and Mario Gianani for Wildside along with Small Forward, Elena Recchia, Nick Hall, Sean Conway, and Francesco Melzi d’Eril.

We Are Who We Are begins on HBO starting on September 14, 2020 at 10:00 P.M. EDT. Watch the first trailer here.

After Madden 21's Rocky Start, Dev Says This Is "Just The Start"

Madden NFL 21 didn't have the smoothest release. As with many of the previous years' releases, this year's Madden was criticized by many reviewers, including here at GameSpot, for its bugs and oddities.

EA has now reiterated that launch is just the beginning for the game. "Madden NFL is a live service and longtime players know that launch is just the start of the annual Madden journey," EA said in a blog post.

To that end, Title Update 2 came out with the game's official release on August 28, and it includes fixes for Face of the Franchise and Ultimate Team, among other areas of the game. EA is planning another, more substantial update to be released in September closer to the start of the NFL season. This patch sounds like it will provide fixes for some of Madden 21's more annoying and frustrating bugs.

Crusader Kings 3 Review Roundup

Crusader Kings 3, Paradox Interactive's newest addition to its medieval strategy RPG series, is out September 1. Ahead of the launch, we've rounded up a selection of reviews to help you decide if Crusader Kings 3 is worth it.

Critics generally praised Crusader Kings 3 highly. It has everything that players loved Crusader Kings 2 for: an imaginative and expansive strategy component, coupled with an in-depth and compelling RPG element.

David Wildgoose, in GameSpot's Crusader Kings 3 review, gave the game a high score of 8/10. Wildgoose stated, "[T]he singular vision of Crusader Kings 3 [is] a grand strategy game that successfully operates across a bewildering scale, feeling vast and unknowable one moment yet awkwardly intimate the next. It's a marvel of connectivity, effectively linking together complementary elements plucked from different genres--the role-playing game, the visual novel, the life simulation, the city-builder, the wargame--even if at times you can sense it straining at the seams."

New Halo Infinite Enemy Revealed Alongside A Closer Look At Master Chief's Suit

Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries has shared some new details about the game's story--specifically, the studio has revealed a new enemy character. Jega 'Rdomnai is a member of The Banished, which is the evil faction of aliens in Halo Infinite. Here is how 343 summed up Jega in a post on Halo Waypoint:

"In hushed whispers throughout the ranks of the Banished, Jega ‘Rdomnai’s name is spoken of with care. The blademaster’s history is shrouded in rumor and half-truths. Some say he was an experiment, an affront to his own kind. Others make mention of a clandestine ambush gone wrong. Very few know the truth, fewer still speak of it. One thing is certain: he has hunted demons before, and as the first recruit welcomed into the Hand of Atriox, he will do so again."

Jega is further described as a "mysterious and battle-ravaged Sangheli warrior." He is one of "several" new characters that players will meet in Halo Infinite, 343 said.

‘Mulan’: Niki Caro Explains Why She Didn’t Need to be Chinese to Direct the Remake

Mulan director on set

Until the next round of Marvel movies come along, Disney’s new live-action remake of Mulan stands as the highest budgeted live-action film with a female director behind it, costing a reported $200 million. It was New Zealand-born director Niki Caro who brought the ancient story to life, but many potential audience members were hoping to see someone with Chinese heritage in the director’s chair for this remake, since the project is so inherently linked with Chinese folklore. Caro addressed that criticism, but ultimately agrees that “more diverse people need to be allowed to tell stories.” Read her quotes below.

Back in February, before the world skidded to a stop due to the pandemic, Caro responded to criticism that a filmmaker with Chinese ancestry, and not a New Zealander, should have been the one to tell this culturally specific story. She told THR: “Although it’s a critically important Chinese story and it’s set in Chinese culture and history, there is another culture at play here, which is the culture of Disney, and that the director, whoever they were, needed to be able to handle both — and here I am.”

That response perhaps wasn’t the exact thing those concerned were hoping to hear, but in a new interview with Film School Rejects, Caro again was asked about the debate about the types of filmmakers that should be allowed to tell different stories, and she acknowledged that it was an important, ongoing conversation that we should all collectively be having:

It’s a very important conversation to be having, and I support it taking place as often as possible. For me, it comes down to two things. Firstly, I resist the idea that you tell somebody who can tell what story. That sounds a little bit like censorship to me. An artist will express themselves, and the burden of responsibility is on the art. That will be judged — and should be judged.

The other side of it is that more diverse people need to be allowed to tell stories. That’s what it comes down to. The people who are hired for all kinds of stories need to be more diverse. It can’t just be white people being hired to make movies, no matter what the subject matter is. Our culture is going to be richer for the more diversity there is, and the art, the movies, the television, it will be better. The more this conversation is being had, the more that diverse artists are given opportunities.

It’s ironic that this discussion about who should be behind the camera has somewhat sidelined the very fact that Caro herself being in the director’s chair is a different type of accomplishment in its own right. But as Caro points out, the benefit of frequently talking about these ideas is that sometimes, Hollywood actually listens. Just look at what’s happening with FX as an example. Here’s hoping film studios continue to open their gates even further and invite more diverse voices to become the new storytellers of this generation.
