Love thy neighbor, and maybe give him a role in your next movie. James Gunn seems to be abiding by that, at least according to a delightful Twitter exchange between the Guardians of the Galaxy director and Star Wars icon Mark Hamill.
Mark Hamill and James Gunn live just around the corner from each other in Malibu, but it seems like it took an inquiring Twitter user to get them to finally exchange Direct Messages. And not just any regular old DMs. DMs about a possible Guardians of the Galaxy 3 role for Hamill.
The two got into a delightful Twitter thread exchange after Gunn said that he was open to finding a role for Hamill in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, inviting the Star Wars: The Last Jedi star over to his house for a cup of coffee.
Hamill, whose Twitter game is always on point, naturally entered the conversation, saying, “I would be happy to do so, both as a good neighbor & an unemployed actor.” The pair then descended into a sweet dialogue where they tried to figure out how to use Twitter’s Direct Message function.
You can see the whole exchange below.
I think @HamillHimself lives around the corner from me in Malibu so he can just come over and we can talk about it over a cup of coffee.

Haha let’s do it.

Yes I will although I don’t think your DMs are on for me.

Just followed you. Is that how DM's work?

See? Twitter is good for something.
So, does this confirm a role for Hamill in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Well, Gunn is obviously not opposed to adding small roles for superstars, featuring Sylvester Stallone and Michelle Yeoh as members of an exciting new team in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
And it’s possible that Hamill will be looking for work, as evidenced by his self-descriptor as an “unemployed actor.” After all, Hamill’s arc as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi saw a pretty definitive end for the character. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Hamill won’t appear in Star Wars Episode 9 — as Yoda and Obi-Wan have shown us, Force Ghosts can still play a pretty pivotal part.
So what does it all mean? Who knows. For now, we’re in the same boat as Josh Gad.
