Is Baby Driver 2 Going to Happen?
Edgar Wright’s music-heavy action thriller Baby Driver peeled into theaters last summer, eventually earning three Oscar nominations and racking up the biggest box office numbers of Wright’s career. Unlike his pal Jordan Peele, who still hasn’t fully committed to make a Get Out 2 just yet, Wright has already said he’s going to make Baby Driver 2 a priority. In December, he said:
“Those talks are already in the works. The deal is being hammered out as we speak. So, hopefully, I’m going to at least write a second one. I’ve definitely got lots of ideas. Whether it’s the next movie, I don’t know. I’m just working that out at the moment, actually. I have a couple of things that I’ve been developing, and also a couple of new ideas that I had, and all the nice things things that I’ve been offered since [the release of Baby Driver].”
Here’s Why a Sequel Makes Sense
When I first walked out of a screening of Baby Driver, I had very little interest in seeing a sequel. Wright is one of the most creative and energetic filmmakers working today, so I was much more invested in the idea of seeing what other new and original movies he had up his sleeve. But I’ve pulled the E-brake and done a tire-squealing about-face on this topic in the year since. At this point, I think Baby Driver 2 would actually help because the original movie is somewhat tainted by the presence of Kevin Spacey. The actor played “Doc” in the first film, and since then, multiple people have come forward accusing him of sexually harassing or assaulting them over the years. Spacey at least partially admitted to some of this behavior, and he’s basically been shunned by Hollywood since – he was replaced in Ridley Scott’s All The Money in the World with weeks left until the release and he was written out of the final season of Netflix’s House of Cards.
Baby Driver is an inventive and fun movie, and I’d be happy to see Wright come back to further flesh out the characters of Baby (Elgort) and Debora (Lilly James) in another adventure. The way the first film ends may make that slightly difficult, but I have faith that Wright could come up with a creative solution. Baby Driver 2 might be a nice opportunity to refine the stylistic choices that originated in the first film, and hopefully improve on a movie that, through no fault of its own, people may cringe at the thought of rewatching now.
