'Roseanne' Canceled by ABC After Star's Racist Tweet

In a stunning move, ABC has canceled hit revival series "Roseanne" following a racist tweet from its titular star.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey released a statement announcing the swift, surprising news Tuesday afternoon, saying:

"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show."

The cancellation comes on the heels of a tweet sent out by star Roseanne Barr on Tuesday morning, in which she made racist comments about a former Obama administration adviser, Valerie Jarrett, referencing the Muslim Brotherhood and "Planet of the Apes." Barr deleted the tweet soon after posting it, and issued an apology, calling her remarks "a bad joke."

But many weren't laughing, including producer Wanda Sykes, who announced that she was leaving the sitcom in protest of Barr's statements.

"Roseanne" costar Sara Gilbert also issued a response on Twitter, saying that Barr's remarks were "abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show."

They weren't alone. Barr's comments ignited a social media firestorm, with many calling on ABC to fire Barr and cancel the series. It didn't take long for the network to do just that.

The revival of "Roseanne" drew enormous ratings when it premiered on ABC earlier this year, making its renewal for season 11 a seeming no-brainer for the network. Looks like ABC has some rethinking to do this fall.
