The 'Avengers: Infinity War' Legal Team Ruined Your Chance to Really Call Steve Rogers

So, you almost heard a voicemail from Captain America...

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) had his own "867-5309/Jenny" moment in "Avengers: Infinity War." Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) broke out a flip phone (!) to call his "Captain America: Civil War" frenemy for backup.

The movie actually showed Steve's phone number -- 678-136-7092.

If a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is going to show a phone number on screen, you'd think they'd back it up with a real message.

Turns out, that was the plan. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo told HuffPost fans can blame "legal" -- various unnamed villains in the Marvel/Disney legal department -- for shutting it down.

"We actually had intended to create a fake voicemail from Steve Rogers," Joe Russo said. "For the people that left the theater and called that number, they would get a voicemail from Steve Rogers."

"And that number was the actual number that we were going to use. We were sort of given that number," said Anthony Russo.

"We had it all ready to go, but legal took that away from us," he added.

Sonofa.

Why is Gamora!

It was a fun idea, anyway, and would've paired perfectly with Cap's PSAs in "Spider-Man: Homecoming." Marvel really does need to give fans a number to call between films, as an anticipation hotline. Maybe just have different characters leaving messages, from "I am Groot" to whatever Drax thinks of next.

"Avengers 4" opens May 3, 2019.
